Abstract
Political mavericks, here referring to elected politicians who remain in office after leaving their political parties, is a disputed phenomenon. The maverick’s action is not legally wrong. One might, however, question if it’s morally desirable.
The purpose of this study, ocurring in a Swedish context, is to answer the question of whether the political maverick can be justified. Using normative method, the maverick’s actions are assesed in relation to a set of different normative premises.
Through concept analysis, the study pinpoints the characteristics of the maverick, arguing that the most valid factor to assess is the decision to stay without party affilliation, as well as the reasons given for that. Together they form different... (More)

Together they form different categories of mavericks.
The study is based upon norms that are part of modern normative representation theory, in which three prominent paradigms put different demands on the role of the politician.
The study concludes that the answer to the question is highly complex. Yes, it is possible to justify the political maverick. But the answer differs depending on which norms are assumed and the type of maverick at hand. There are also some aspects of the political maverick’s action to which the theories give limited guidance. (Less)
