- This essay examines which civic ideals that are described in the Swedish nine-year compulsory school, the journal from the Swedish Teachers Union and the journal from the National Union of Teachers in Sweden. One of the most important tasks for the nine-year compulsory school is to educate future citizens, however, other actors strive to influence the values and ideals during this education. The Swedish Teachers Union and the National Union of Teachers in Sweden are two of these actors and their journals are compared with the curriculum for the compulsory school from the Swedish National Agency for Education. By using qualitative analysis of ideas, two different dimensions of citizenship and theories of citizenship, active citizenship and the policy of activation, dominating ideals in the primary material are distinguished. The essay discusses the different existing interpretations of the concept “lifelong learning” and how citizen should be formed in the 2010s. Despite the three actors’ different civic ideals, this essay concludes the common view that the ideal citizen is responsible, committed, active and attending lifelong learning. (Less)
