The aim of this study was to examine physical activity as a part of the treatment at an institution for substance users. More specifically its aim was to find out how the substance users experience how physical activity can be affected by ongoing trends in society, the image of the ideal body and the encouragement from staff. The study was based on seven interviews with substance users at two linked group institutions in Sweden. Similar themes were identified in the different interviews and the analysis was later based on the power exerted by staff, the combination of physical activity and treatment and lastly the role of society. As a conclusion the trends in society are reflected in the treatment. The physical activity and healthy eating is used to uphold the normality and also in the strive for the ideal body. Positive effects of the physical activity were shown, but it is essential to have the individuals condition in focus when creating the physical activity program. The power exerted by staff was requested to be stronger. What we could see was that in the end it is the individuals own power of discipline that controls how they make best use of the possibilities the treatment facility has to offer. (Less)
