- Stora Karlsö Nya Museum är en undersökning kring hur arkitektur kan berätta om platsens själ och historia,samt en vision för hur detta kan gestaltas i en ny museibyggnad på ön.
Platsen är en fågelö belägen strax utanför Gotlands västra kust; en kalkstensplatå som tycks resa sig rakt upp ur Östersjön. Det är ett naturreservat med besöksverksamhet som sträcker sig mellan maj och september. På ön finns en fyr, ett vandrarhem, en restaurang och ett museum. Stora Karlsö är känt för sin karga och vackra natur, sin intressanta historia, men kanske framförallt för sitt rika växt- och djurliv. Årligen häckar tusentals fåglar här, och säsongens höjdpunkt är grisslingen, då hundratals sillgrissleungar hoppar ner från klippväggarna för att sedan... Det befintliga museet på Stora Karlsö invigdes 1966 och är i behov av förnyelse. En ambition att modernisera museet har funnits sedan en tid tillbaka, och det är i denna målsättning som projektet tar sitt avstamp.
Frågorna som projektet ämnar besvara är:
• Hur kan byggnaden (museet) genom sin arkitektur berätta om platsens historia?
• Är det möjligt att genom samtida arkitektur förmedla platsens själ?
Med utgångspunkt i öns historia och de lokala byggnadstraditionerna utformas Stora Karlsö Nya Museum för att bli en kunskapskälla att återvända till, men också en byggnad som talar till våra känslor och sinnen, som känns förankrad i det uråldriga berget. (Less) - Abstract

The place is a bird island situated just off the western coast of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea. It is a nature reserve with a visiting season stretching from May to September. On the island is a light house, a hostel, a restaurant and a museum. Stora Karlsö is famous for its spectacular and barren nature, its interesting history, but maybe above all for its abundant birds’ life as well as its unique flora. Every year, thousands of birds breed here, and the highlight of the season is the jump of the guillemot nestlings;when hundreds of chicks make a dramatic drop off... The questions that the thesis intends to answer is:
• How can the building (museum) through its architecture tell us about the history of the island?
• Is it possible to mediate the spirit of place through contemporary architecture?
Based on the island’s history and the local building tradition, Stora Karlsö New Museum is designed tobecome a source of knowledge to return to, but also a building that speaks to our feelings and sensations, that appears rooted in the age-old bedrock. (Less)
