This was achieved by conducting semi-structured, qualitative interviews with five social workers working with social welfare in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Theories about professionalism were used to analyze the results and put the spotlight on different aspects of professionalism and ways to be professional. The study found that the social workers experience several limiting factors when it comes to their ability to make professional decisions regarding their clients’ best interests. These limitations are created by a combination of laws, rules, regulations, and their own thoughts and opinions about what would be best for their clients. The social workers often end up in a place where they are torn between different aspects of professionalism, which affects their ability make decisions regarding what is best for their clients. They have to navigate a sometimes-uncertain job situation where different thoughts about what is considered the professional and right thing to do clash. (Less)
