Abstract
This study’s objective is to, with an empirical approach, decode the practical use of the reasoned opinions regarding the principle of subsidiarity in the EU. By charting the submitted reasoned opinions between 2015 – 2019, the study intends to declare how active each parliament has been during this time period along with identifying what kind of policy area that has been the most co-occurrent. Assisting the analysis, the study applies two theoretical stands on why the reasoned opinions can be interpreted as being an effective or ineffective policy tool. The outcome of the study shows that there is a significant variation in which parliaments are more active. The study also shows that the reasoned opinions submitted between 2015 – 2019... (More)
This study’s objective is to, with an empirical approach, decode the practical use of the reasoned opinions regarding the principle of subsidiarity in the EU. The study also shows that the reasoned opinions submitted between 2015 – 2019 have covered a majority of the possible policy areas presented. From the theoretical standpoints, the result indicates in both favour - meaning that they both underpin how to interpret the empirical charting and therefore give two perspective on the result. Regardless of choice of theory, the study demonstrates the practical use of the reasoned opinions in the EU and provides a categorisation instrument for future research concerning policy areas related to the principle of subsidiarity.
