- Abstract
- A large part of the greenhouse gas emissions and energy use comes from the construction industry. This thesis addresses some of the environmental and energy challenges the construction industry faces regarding renovating buildings. The examined building is Trelleborg Energi´s headquarters. Programs such as IDA ICE, Espoo, Renobuild and Miljöbyggnad 3.1 have been used to review and obtain results. Various materials and components have been examined from a life cycle and energy perspective. Bio-based materials are most environmentally sustainable while the examined super-insulating materials cannot be defended from an environmental point of view. Ordinary materials such as mineral wool are generally a good alternative. When improving the... (More)

Bio-based materials are most environmentally sustainable while the examined super-insulating materials cannot be defended from an environmental point of view. Ordinary materials such as mineral wool are generally a good alternative. When improving the building facade, energy use decreased by 63.5% and with both improved building façade and installations the energy resulting in a total energy decrease of 76.3%. The results show that there are many possibilities for environmental and energy improvements in the facade for buildings like this one. (Less)
