- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to analyze different types of leadership among managers in health and social care in Malmö during the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. Based on what is often described as an organization that was already in a vulnerable financial situation, managers develop and use different types of leadership. More specifically, this study aims to investigate how the leadership among managers was affected by the ongoing pandemic and how this impacted the employee’s work situation. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with two managers and two assistant nurses at a nursing home for people with dementia in Malmö. More specifically, this study aims to investigate how the leadership among managers was affected by the ongoing pandemic and how this impacted the employee’s work situation. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with two managers and two assistant nurses at a nursing home for people with dementia in Malmö. My theoretical approach builds on organizational theory with bureaucracy as the core analytical concept even though I also present different types of leaderships, such as transformational leadership and servant leadership. The hierarchy of the organization impacts their discretion because decision making takes time in rigid bureaucratic organizations. The study suggests that there is still room for the managers to form their own kind of leadership. However, the organization requires more control from the managers to sustain the safety of both workers and residents in the nursing homes during the pandemic. This study concludes that the leadership has changed during the pandemic, specifically in the way that managers must tackle a more controlling environment due to stronger regulations from authorities, as well as concerns among employees regarding health and safety. However, the main principals of the participation for the worker in their workplace as well as having a reflective way of viewing their own leadership was still intact. (Less)
