Abstract
Title: Brain Gym®? An approach to increase self-knowledge in situations of learning?- A study at the Malmö Academy of Music from a teacher and student perspective. Brain Gym® is a method developed by Paul Dennison in his studies of physiology and aims to eliminate potential blockages during the process of learning. During the influence of stress, as in learning, we do not possess a total access to our perceptive ability. Instead we are limited to our so called dominance profile. This profile describes which of our senses that, during the influence of stress, will perform better respectively worse. This study aims to investigate in what ways Brain Gym® in piano courses may have influenced students at the Malmö Academy of Music. The study is based on qualitative interviews with three students and their piano teacher. In this study two students out of three experience that they are able to prevent stress by using exercises from Brain Gym®. All three students declare that the dominance profile is an accurate description of how they experience themselves in situations of learning.

Brain Gym® är en metod utvecklad utifrån Paul Dennisons studier i fysiologi och syftar till att tillintetgöra eventuella låsningar och blockeringar vid lärande. I stressituationer, som då vi lär oss, har vi inte full tillgång till vår totala perceptionsförmåga. Vi är snarare begränsade till vår så kallade dominansprofil. Denna profil beskriver vilka sinnen hos oss som under stress kommer att fungera sämre respektive bättre. För att motverka denna begränsning har Brain Gym® skapat en rad olika övningar, vilka påstås bidra till ett balanserat lärande. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka på vilka sätt Brain Gym® i pianoundervisning kan ha påverkat studenter vid Musikhögskolan i Malmö. Studien är baserad på kvalitativa intervjuer med tre studenter och deras pianolärare. I denna studie upplever två studenter av tre att de genom Brain Gym övningar kan motverka stress.
