Abstract
The focus of this study is the ways in which the discourses of the three largest right-wing populist parties in Scandinavia ? Danish Dansk Folkeparti, Norwegian Fremskrittspartiet and Swedish Sverigedemokraterna ? are articulated and on defining which individuals they include and exclude. The focus of this study is the ways in which the discourses of the three largest right-wing populist parties in Scandinavia ? The discourses of the three parties are compared and analyzed to determine whether they constitute specific nationalist and culturally racist discourses. The problem is addressed by applying a social constructivist theory of nationalism and cultural racism, and specifically the binary opposition ?we? and ?them?, on a material consisting of the respective parties? member magazines from 2007. The method used to identify the possible nationalist and culturally racist elements of the parties? discourses is inspired by Laclau and Mouffe's discursive text analysis. The study argues that the discourses employed by all the parties have strong xenophobic elements. In the cases of both Dansk Folkeparti and Sverigedemokraterna they fulfill the theoretical criteria for being specific nationalist and culturally racist discourses, in which the views of the nation are based on the culturalist approach of primordialism. The discourse employed by Fremskrittspartiet, however, does not fulfill these criteria. Thus, Fremskrittspartiet appears to have a less hostile attitude towards immigrants than the other two parties.
