Abstract
Title:

Chillchain for cut flowers ? how the distribution works.

Author:

Anna-Maja Svarén, student at Lund Institute of Technology, mechanical engineering.

Supervisors:

Annika Olsson, Department of Design Sciences.

Bengt Sahlberg, Bioett AB.

Problem:

How does the distribution of cut flower works regarding temperature, losses, responsibility, complaints, packaging and weak points?

Purpose:

The purpose is to map the distribution of cut flowers, with focus on losses in the temperature, from farm to store. The goal is to identify weak points in the chillchain and to se how wrong temperatures affect the flowers. The results can be a help to secure the chillchain.

Method:

Method:

The work started with a problem; map the distribution of cut flowers with focus on temperature losses. Data was collected on the basis of this problem, then analysed, and finally conclusions were drawn.

Conclusions:

The affect handling and distribution has on a cut flower is very complex. The quality depends on everything between how it is treated before harvest to how the consumer is treating it. When a flower is wilting it is difficult to know the reason why. By increasing the control during distribution and handling it is possible to guarantee a better quality.

? The handling varies by different participants.

? There is a lack of control in the distribution. If the integration between transport companies and other participants is increased the quality can be better.

? Better measure routines for temperature and humidity are needed.

? The quality can also be better by increasing the level of knowledge in the flower industry.

? The quality can be measured whit a number of parameters, by example delivery time, vase life, transport temperature and number of complaints. These parameters should be measured continuously and not when there is a problem.

? A careful mapping of where losses arise can be a valuable help to improve the quality of cut flowers.

? The packaging used to distribute cut flowers and why it is used should be evaluated better.

Increasing the communication and integration between the participants in the industry can contribute to a better distribution. (Less)
