Abstract
Does playing have to hurt? - A quantitative study of ergonomics and double bass playing. This is a paper about ergonomics and double bass playing. I have studied the prevalence of playing-related pain in professional double bass players, teachers and students. This study is based on a questionnaire with 11 questions about double bass playing and pain. The answers come from 185 double bassists from all over the world. This is, as far as I know, the only study exclusively of double bassists. All previous studies are of musicians as a group or string players (mainly violinists). I came to the conclusion that there is a very high prevalence of playing-related pain regarding double bass players. More research is needed to come to terms with the... (More)

(Less)
