Abstract
In 1997 Tetra Brik Packaging Systems (TBPS) introduced the Prisma family into the portfolio. The family, which contains four volumes: X ml, 330 ml, 1000 ml and 2000 ml, is characterised by having eight panels at mid height. The new shape of the packages has forced TBPS to make modifications in the equipment and alterations in the distribution chain, from producers to consumers.

This master's thesis comprehends four main fields:

1. Analysis of consumption material

2. Prisma packaging lines

3. Consumer's approach

4. Case study of a distribution system

The family, which contains four volumes: X ml, 330 ml, 1000 ml and 2000 ml, is characterised by having eight panels at mid height. The new shape of the packages has forced TBPS to make modifications in the equipment and alterations in the distribution chain, from producers to consumers.

This master's thesis comprehends four main fields:

All consumption material needed in the packaging line is analysed. ln general, the material consumption of the packaging material for the Prisma family is small compared to TBA packages. The TPA packages for each volume consumes 5.0-7.9% less packaging material. The consumption of the tab-strip is 18.5-52.7%, for TXA X Sq and TPA 330 Sq, more and 23.4% less for TPA 1000 S compared to the reference packages for each volume.

An examination of 20 Prisma lines with the support of the TP Market Companies in France, Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Italy has been carried out. The purpose was to collect information about the distribution chain, and to examine how TBPS recommendations are followed. The conclusion is that the recommendations are not followed as further down in the packaging line that is examined. In the supply chain the recommendations are not followed. For example the choice of secondary packaging is not always followed and pallet stacking is common.

Two panel tests have been carried out for the volume 1000 ml and the volume X ml. Considering all aspects, e.g. price, functionality, package shape etc., that are important when purchasing a product, the TPA 1000 S was the most popular, due to it's shape and functionality. In the panel test volume X ml the TXA X Sq was the most popular one. That because the package is comfortable to hold, has an attractive appearance and looks fresh.

A distribution system has been mapped out focusing on the TPA 1000 S, Identifications about the recommended machines and damages have been done. The further down in the packaging line, more often the recommendations are not followed. Damages like bulged, displaced and compressed trays with TPA packages have been identified. At the producer site pallet, stacking was observed and this may be the reason behind bulged trays and packages. Stretch film wrapping is sometimes too tight around the trays. At a retailer's warehouse dirty packages have been found on several occasions. The dirty packages were distributed in Open trays. (Less)
