Title: The social relation between student & teacher in individual music education. The aim of this study is to examine the relevance of the social relation between teacher and student in instrumental tuition in non-compulsory music education. The method I have used is qualitative interview inspired by phenomenology. I have made interviews with four persons who have experienced individual singing/instrumental studies on several different levels. Title: The social relation between student & teacher in individual music education. The aim of this study is to examine the relevance of the social relation between teacher and student in instrumental tuition in non-compulsory music education. The method I have used is qualitative interview inspired by phenomenology. I have made interviews with four persons who have experienced individual singing/instrumental studies on several different levels. In this paper I wish to shed light on what people who have experienced many years of singing/instrumental studies are telling about the social relation to their former pedagogues. Furthermore I am examining what these informants, today working as singing/instrumental teachers, think about the social relation to their own students. The main results show that all my informants have experienced complications in the relations to their former pedagogues and that these experiences have affected their work as teachers and musicians today.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka den sociala relationen mellan lärare och elev i enskild musikundervisning. I studien har jag använt mig av kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra informanter som har erfarenheter av sång- och instrumentalstudier på flera nivåer. Med denna uppsats önskar jag belysa vad personer med gedigen erfarenhet av enskild musikundervisning kan berätta om den sociala relationen till sina tidigare pedagoger. Jag undersöker också hur dessa personer, idag aktiva som sång- och instrumentallärare, värderar relationen till sina egna elever. Resultaten visar att samtliga av mina informanter har erfarenheter av komplikationer i relationerna med sina tidigare pedagoger och att dessa erfarenheter har påverkat deras arbete som lärare och musiker idag.
