The papershows how the relation between music teachers and their ability to be devoted to practising music of their own choice, affects them as individuals. The study is carried out at a Swedish upper secondary school which has an educational programme that is focused on music. The school is a context that is considered attractive for music teachers and this affects the result of the study. The method used in this study is interviews. I have interviewed 5 music teachers and analysed their answers. I have used studies in the same area to learn more about music teachers before, during and after education, to be able to better analyse the result of the interviews. The main results show that the teachers in this study are not able to practise music, besides working as teachers, as much as they wish to do. When Swedish music teachers go through their education it is important for them to be musicians and when they start working as teachers they have to change their identity and become teachers, rather than musicians. This study shows that it is still important for music teachers to be musicians. They are not able to devote themselves to music besides work as much as they would like to and that creates frustration. (Less)
