The aim of this paper is to discuss how students talk about ear training and music theory. Qualitative group interviews were carried out with two student groups from the first and second year of the upper secondary school. The results show that most of the students think that studies in music theory are difficult because of the theoretical approach, which differ a lot from playing music. A conclusion among others is that it is important to work with music theory in other contexts, for example in more praxis based subjects as ensemble. It is also of great importance that students are given the possibility to reflect and discuss their thoughts about music theory with other students as well as with their teachers. (Less)
