Abstract
This is an explorative study about subject indexing of a special collection of books, administered by the John Andrén Foundation at the library of Ystad. The study summarises a number of theoretical perspectives as well as some practical instructions on how to carry out the task. Theories have been placed into five different groups according to their various approaches to subject indexing. These have been analysed in regard to their usefulness to the Andrén collection. The authors have tested and evaluated six practical models on a selection of books from the Andrén collection. The conclusion is that a practical model for subject indexing should support the identification of subjects and their aspects as well as how to choose indexing... (More)
This is an explorative study about subject indexing of a special collection of books, administered by the John Andrén Foundation at the library of Ystad. The conclusion is that a practical model for subject indexing should support the identification of subjects and their aspects as well as how to choose indexing terms. In order to do so the model needs a good theoretical framework. The authors have formulated a model for subject indexing the Andrén collection, according to the theoretical perspectives that are most useful to this collection. It also draws on the results of userstudies related to the field of humanities. The model contains a checklist with questions that help to identify the subjects of a document. Indexing terms should be selected from a controlled vocabulary to ensure consistency. The vocabulary should correspond to that of the collection and its users. (Less)
