Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to study the coming into being of two newly built public libraries in Sweden, Malmö public library and Linköping public library. In both cases, the architect was appointed through a competition. We have examined the degree of importance that one has put on the buildings functionality and aesthetics, respectively. Furthermore we have studied how the cooperation between library staff and the architects has worked, and finally we have studied to which degree the parties involved think that the interests of the users has been taken into concern. The first main chapter of the report is an overview of the literature found on the subject where we present theories on library architecture used in Sweden as well as... (More)
The purpose of this essay is to study the coming into being of two newly built public libraries in Sweden, Malmö public library and Linköping public library. The first main chapter of the report is an overview of the literature found on the subject where we present theories on library architecture used in Sweden as well as abroad. This is followed by a short description of the two libraries and two empirical chapters, where the competition material and our interviews are presented. In the discussion we present how we consider that one could facilitate the coming into being of new public libraries. We state that invitational competitions not always is an ideal approach. One may instead use so called parallel assignments. If one chooses invitational competitions it is essential to have only one programme which should not be too strictly formulated and should emphasise functional as well as aesthetic qualities. It should also be stated even in the programme that modifications of the winning suggestion are to be done by the architect and the librarians in collaboration. To avoid a situation where aesthetics is prioritised at the expense of functionality one should strive to achieve a representative balance of the professional categories involved when constructing a jury. An external, non-biased library expert with knowledge of architecture as well as library issues will facilitate both the writing of the programme and the work of the jury. Finally, one ought to conduct user inquiries in order to find out what desires the users have regarding the new library (Less)
