Abstract
The focus of this thesis is the library at the Swedish school in Berlin, Germany. Being a school in a foreign country, and playing a role also as a public library, the conditions for the library are somewhat unusual. Considering those conditions, how should the library be organised and developed to meet the users' needs in the best way possible? To put the library in Berlin into a greater perspective, the first chapters of the thesis are dedicated to the issue of school libraries in Sweden; their historical development, their importance in the school curriculum and their present situation. Swedish research in the field of school libraries is presented and includes descriptions of theoretical analysing models. Four school libraries in the area of Lund are briefly described and analysed. The current situation at the library in Berlin is thoroughly described and analysed. People involved with the library (teachers, pupils, parents etc.) were interviewed and could express their opinions on the library's role. Based upon both the study of the general situation in Sweden and the study of the specific conditions and expectations in Berlin, a proposition of reorganisation and development of the library at the Swedish school in Berlin is presented. Long-term objectives as well as practical details are included. The research in the area of libraries at foreign schools is close to non-existent. A general conclusion in this thesis is that libraries at foreign schools probably play even more important roles as cultural and educational resources than libraries at domestic schools. (Less)
