Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out why people choose to be physically inactive when only thirty minutes of exercise a day is sufficient to have a positive effect on one's health. In order to find out the reasons why people do not exercise, we conducted semistructured interviews with twenty people from Malmoe. The participants were between 23 and 63 years of age with the group consisting of twelve women and eight men. The individual interviews took about 45 minutes each and were made up of questions of various subjects including how physical activity was viewed in the workplace, at home and in one's daily life overall. The results are in accordance with our initial hypothesis which was that people are aware of the risks of being... (More)

The results are in accordance with our initial hypothesis which was that people are aware of the risks of being sedentary but still choose to be physically inactive. Our analysis shows the biggest reasons for physical inactivity are lack of time, laziness and that one prioritises other things before exercise. Key words: physical activity, physical inactivity, exercise, motivation, denial stage, consciousness raising, reasons/obstacles to inactivity. (Less)
