Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to investigate the experience of alcohol intoxication for six students in Lund and what meaning and function alcohol has in their lives. The students were interviewed about their alcohol consumption; how they defined a problematic one, their experiences of alcohol intoxication, and its function and meaning. A qualitative method was used, as the purpose of the study was to try to understand the respondents’ subjective experiences and not to investigate students’ alcohol consumption in general. The study showed that the respondents mainly used alcohol as a way to have fun with friends and to meet new people. Alcohol was a way to relax and to get away from problems and worries of daily life, as well as a possibility to temporarily behave in a more careless and irresponsible way. When drinking the respondents experienced feelings of happiness and relaxation and, for some, alcohol made them look at life, other people and themselves more optimistically. There was a difference of opinion concerning the definition of problematic alcohol consumption. Some stressed the importance of not drinking too much and behaving well when drinking, whereas others emphasised the frequency to a greater extent. (Less)
