Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to study how gender is represented and passed on in a small number of juvenile books. I wanted to find out what parts girls and boys play in the stories, in what circumstances they figure and which problems they are ascribed. I chose six popular books for the youth, and studied them meticulously. The study is qualitative and I asked the text questions just like you would at an interview. The questions were about sex roles, relations and problem areas. I found that some of the characters lived up to sex role stereotyped expectations on how girls and boys should be and behave. Characteristic of all the six books is that girls’ appearances and relations are strongly emphasized. Boys, on the other hand, do not... (More)

Characteristic of all the six books is that girls’ appearances and relations are strongly emphasized. Boys, on the other hand, do not have the same strong bonds to friends and family. The boys are adventurous and they try hard to seem brave while the girls worry about their looks and about what boys think of them. Girls have problems concerning their own body, boys, criminality and drugs. Boys have problems with insecurity, girls, racism and violence. (Less)
