Keywords: Migration, Women, Germany, Sweden, the Welfare State The purpose with this research was to study ten Swedish women’s immigration to North Rhine - Westphalia in Germany. The main questions covered: 1. Reasons for immigration. 2. Experiences of the immigration process. 3. Description of everyday life in Germany. The research is based on a qualitative method. The interviews were half structured. To have more theoretical and historical knowledge I included literature studies. Depending on their background the women found various degrees of difficulties with the initial period of immigration. The study discusses the differences between the Swedish welfare state and the German welfare state. The Swedish model encourages both spouses to work and provide income. Families in Germany are more dependent on the man being the sole provider. This contrast has a profound impact on the interviewees daily lives. (Less)
