What do curses and swearwords mean for children and adults in today's society and how do they experience it? Are there differences and similarities between younger and older children, and between girls and boys? The investigative part of the paper took place in a junior and intermediate level of school. We used an opinion poll for the staff and interviewed 22 children. Furthermore we conducted observations at the school. Our results show that swearing and cursing is a part of children's everyday life. Curses and swearwords were described similarly as bad words and forceful expressions by children and adults, they both also found words and expressions which allude to sexuality more troublesome than others. Cursing and swearing maintains a large variety of functions for the children, such as expressing emotions and marking your identity and belonging to a group. Half of the staff considered children's cursing and swearing as a problem. The children are accepting to cursing and swearing, when it's not used as words of abuse. Adults and society also condemn words of abuse. Factors which influence children's cursing and swearing are family and friends, school, leisure, politics, the media etc. But the child itself also influences its surroundings. (Less)
