- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to examine if discrimination of obese women occurs and if people in general have prejudices against these women. We have made an investigation to find out if there is any connection between female obesity and social exclusion/discrimination. We wanted to investigate how obese women feel about the treatment in the society and investigate how people in general perceive obese women. We have also put the prejudices in relation to facts. Our essential questions are: Is there any connection between female obesity and social exclusion/discrimination? How does society treat obese women? What attitudes and possible prejudices occur in our society about obese women? Do the possible prejudices affect the social life situation for the women? Do the possible prejudices also affect people in general? What are the factors behind the possible prejudices? Is there a stigmatization of obese women and does this mean that there is also a self stigmatization? The theoretical frame of reference is based upon two theories; Anthony Giddens late society and the labelling theory. We chose to work with a qualitative method in the form of interviews. When we analysed the material we found that prejudices against obese women are very common. Media and commercials strengthen these prejudices. Obese women are also stigmatised and discriminated in our society. The stigmatization leads to a self stigmatization and the prejudices affect their life in a negative way. (Less)
