- Abstract
- The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the social and psychological situation of a group of women that are involved in prostitution in combination with drug- or alcohol addiction, and to gain understanding of it. The study focuses on commercial streetwalkers. The purpose is based on the following questions: 1) What is the consensus on the reasons, causes and factors for entering into prostitution? 2) What is the link between drug addiction and prostitution? 3) What is the characteristic sign for the career of prostitution? 4) What is the general opinion of the consequences of a life in prostitution? 5) How would the ex-prostitutes normally describe their way out of prostitution, and how would scientists and professionals in... - The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the social and psychological situation of a group of women that are involved in prostitution in combination with drug- or alcohol addiction, and to gain understanding of it. The study focuses on commercial streetwalkers. The purpose is based on the following questions: 1) What is the consensus on the reasons, causes and factors for entering into prostitution? 2) What is the link between drug addiction and prostitution? 3) What is the characteristic sign for the career of prostitution? 4) What is the general opinion of the consequences of a life in prostitution? 5) How would the ex-prostitutes normally describe their way out of prostitution, and how would scientists and professionals in different areas who meet these women describe the process that normally includes a psychological crisis? Different theoretical perspectives were utilized in efforts to understand and explain why young women drift or jump into prostitution. This research provides an attempt to analyze prostitution in a social-psychological perspective in combination with a psychodynamic perspective. We gathered the information by reading literature, articles and internet sources and also through interviews with ten professionals who meet the prostitutes daily. (Less)
