Is it possible that shortcomings in the professional methods may be conducive to divorce? What effect does powers structures within the family have on marital problems? What do the clients think of the help they receive, and what kind of understanding do the social assistants have for the immigrants' marital problems? We did a qualitative study, and interviewed seven people. Three are immigrants who are divorced, two work as family counsellors and two work as family law secretaries. We found that the different groups had a similar view on reasons for divorce among immigrants. All of them mentioned the women's increasing power as one cause for the high divorce numbers among immigrants. The main difference between the family counsellors and the family law secretaries was that the family counsellors were not inclined to talk about structural factors to the same extent that the family law secretaries were.
