Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this essay was to investigate the welfare level of five visually handicapped children and their families. I want to illustrate the obstacles and possibilities there are for the visually handicapped children to take part of the welfare that's indicated in the Swedish Government Official Report (SoU 2001:55). What demands do the parents have from the outside by having a visually handicapped child? What... (More)

Questions The essay deals with the following central questions: How is the child affected by being visually handicapped? How is the family effected by having a visually handicapped child? What demands do the parents have from the outside by having a visually handicapped child? What kind of support is the family getting from the county/state/government/other authorities? Has the rights of the child been met? Is the rights of the child going to be met depending on the parent's involvement? Do the parents worry about their visually handicapped child's schooling and future? Method I did qualitative interviews with five families with visually handicapped children. I having a pattern with different themes the families could develop structured the interviews. The interviews were done with both parents and children present in their home. The result The result of my study shows that there is a lack of access to the welfare (programs) for the visually handicapped children. As an example the difficulty of getting around independently, the local authority's lack of understanding of the visually handicapped children's needs and the laws lack of respect for the rights of the child etc. (Less)
