Abstract
The aim with this paper is to trying to give its reader an insight into the alleged abuse at institutions for children that was run by various religious orders of the Catholic church in Ireland. My research is mainly based on the 20th century, but I have also taken earlier centuries into account in order to get a wider picture of the development of the service provided by the religious orders. I have also tried to seek an explanation to why constant abuse and mistreatment of the children were allowed in these institutions that were suppose to be safe, caring and loving places for the children. The aim with this paper is to trying to give its reader an insight into the alleged abuse at institutions for children that was run by various religious orders of the Catholic church in Ireland. I have also tried to seek an explanation to why constant abuse and mistreatment of the children were allowed in these institutions that were suppose to be safe, caring and loving places for the children. The method I have used in order to try to gain some answers to my questions was the document analysis, where I used already published material in this field. There are several books and material published about the Catholic church and its family values and ideology, but very few about the institutions and their aim and goals themselves. There are no straight forward answers to why this treatment of children was allowed, especially while in care of religious orders within the Catholic church. I am trying to seek a better understanding to why this problem became more common and widely spread around the country. Despite the public apology conducted by An Taoiseach (Prime minister) Bertie Ahern on May 11th 1999, there are still no answers published into the enquiries, why physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children placed at institutions took place.
