Abstract
The aim of this study was to get a picture of the existing knowledge on women in prison. This knowledge is to be found in earlier research, in the material of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service and with people working, paid or voluntarily, with women in prison. To get a broad picture I did both a literature study and qualitative interviews with people working at a prison. There is not much research done on women in prison, and the research done often lacks gender analysis. My conclusion was that the knowledge is relatively uniform; women in prison is described as a group with many problems such as drug abuse, homelessness and unemployment.
