Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to describe and compare the Swedish and Danish societies' attitude towards narcotics in regard of social efforts against drug abuse. When it came to social efforts, we were in particular interested in comparing Malmö in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark. The questions we used was: - Under what circumstances did the present politics of narcotics develop in Denmark and Sweden respectively? - Is there a difference between social legislation in Sweden and in Denmark regarding abuse of narcotics? - What kind of social efforts against abuse of narcotics are the main priorities? The purpose of this essay was to describe and compare the Swedish and Danish societies' attitude towards narcotics in regard of social efforts against drug abuse. When it came to social efforts, we were in particular interested in comparing Malmö in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark. The questions we used was: - Under what circumstances did the present politics of narcotics develop in Denmark and Sweden respectively? - Is there a difference between social legislation in Sweden and in Denmark regarding abuse of narcotics? - What kind of social efforts against abuse of narcotics are the main priorities? The method we used was a comparative method. Our main sources consisted of secondary material. We also made educational visits in the purpose of deepen our acknowledgement. We discovered that there are many differences as well as similarities between the two countries. Our focus was on the differences. The most important distinction that we found was the way the both countries used harm reduction, such as methadone and needle exchange, in the care of drug abusers. Denmark has a much more liberal attitude towards harm reduction efforts than Sweden. Another interesting distinction between the two countries lies within the social legislation. Sweden has a law that permit's use of coercive measures in case of serious abuse of narcotics. Denmark does not. (Less)
