Research shows that only about half of the cases where teachers suspect that a child is abused or neglected are reported to the Social Welfare Agencies. The purpose of this study was to illuminate School personnel and Child Protective Agencies staff opinions on how they cooperate around maltreated children. We focused on four different aspects of cooperation; mandatory reporting, responsibility, feedback and organisation. Ten semi structured interviews were conducted with four teachers, one principal, one special needs teacher and four personnel from Child Protective Agencies from two different municipalities. We chose to use communication theory since it explains both positive and negative aspects in human relations. Communication is a central factor for revealing how the collaboration works between organisations. The main findings in this study showed that some personnel wished for better collaboration between the Schools and the Child Protective Agencies, but the answers varied amongst the interviewed. Factors that were pointed out to influence the cooperation were organisational structure, feedback and equal or different approaches to legislation and responsibility. (Less)
