The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspectives held regarding diversity in Swedish organizations considered successful in their diversity management. The first focus was to examine the definitions of diversity in these organizations. The second was to understand their motives and experiences regarding the effects of an increased diversity. Thirdly I sought to understand the relation between working to prevent further discrimination while highlighting people’s differences.
I met with five representatives from three different organizations in southern Sweden with whom I conducted individual interviews. Through the use of hermeneutic theory and practice and interpretation of Charles Taylor’s thoughts on multiculturalism I interpreted these individual experiences and perspectives into a greater understanding of how diversity management is conducted in Sweden today. The conclusions of the study was that ethnic diversity seems to be the primary focus of these organizations and that their main reason for diversifying is profitability although some morality plays a part in the process. Finally I found that diversity management in the organizations does not involve special treatment for some groups in terms of affirmative action. Instead focus lies on helping the favored groups become more competitive in the employment market. (Less)
