Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate how elite distance runners in Sweden work effectively with goal setting and whether effective goal setting is related to the athlete’s personality. Goal setting is one of the most commonly used strategies to enhance performance, but it is not widely known how to use it effectively with respect to individual differences. 26 participants were interviewed regarding their use of goal setting and afterwards asked to fill out one personality test, the NEOLike Small, and one test for goal orientation, the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire. The results showed a negative correlation between ego orientation in sport and agreeableness (r = -0,58), as well as between ego orientation and... (More)

The results showed a negative correlation between ego orientation in sport and agreeableness (r = -0,58), as well as between ego orientation and conscientiousness (r = -0,47). A positive correlation was found between agreeableness and conscientiousness (r = 0,68). The participants’ responses to the interview guide were all fairly similar, which led to a discussion about cultural influences. Furthermore the responses from the participants indicated an incomplete interaction between the coach and the athlete, which generated suggestions of future improvements in goal setting strategies. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
