Concept Study of a Column-Mounted Plate Condeser

- Abstract
- This thesis is conducted in collaboration with Alfa Laval Lund AB. Alfa Laval is a
world leading producer of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling equipment. The
products help Alfa Laval’s customers to heat, cool, separate and transfer products
such as oil, water, chemicals, beverages, starch and pharmaceuticals in over 100
countries all over the world.
The hardening competition together with the lack of a competitive product of their
own in the field of column-mounted condensers, have made Alfa Laval, and their

The hardening competition together with the lack of a competitive product of their
own in the field of column-mounted condensers, have made Alfa Laval, and their
customers, interested in exploring the possibility of developing a column-mounted
condenser based on plate heat exchanger technology.
The objective of this thesis was therefore to perform a concept study to investigate the
possibility of developing a product of this sort. During this process a possible design
has been developed and evaluated. The study has covered the design of the concept,
from the general architecture of the concept to a detailed design. Within the detail
design calculations have been made to get an idea of the approximate dimensions of
the different parts of the design. These calculations were made in accordance with the
Swedish Pressure Vessel Code from 1987. To evaluate two alternative frame plate
designs, FEM calculations have been made using ANSYS Workbench.
An analysis of possible corrugation patterns has also been conducted. The different
patterns were evaluated by using results from thermal calculation performed on the
patterns. However these calculations are very rough and are to some extent based on
assumptions. With regard to the results attained, a suggestion on a possible plate
design has been included in the report.
The results that were attained during the course of this thesis have been used to make
an economic forecast of the concept. In this forecast an estimated factory price and
the cost per square meter have been established. The results of this economic forecast
show that a product, according to this concept principle , should be very competitive
in the market of column-mounted condensers. (Less)
