Abstract
Problem discussion:
BCC:s product portfolio includes a transplanting machine that plants
seedlings from trays to the field. The machine is more than 10 years old
and need improvements to meet future demands from customers around
the world. The main issues are that the machine does not have the capacity
to detect missing plants from trays, the planting speed needs to be higher
and the row distance more flexible. The main assignment of the master
thesis is to generate two different suggestions for the module on the
transplanting machine. The module is loaded with trays and the main task

Problem discussion:
BCC:s product portfolio includes a transplanting machine that plants
seedlings from trays to the field. The machine is more than 10 years old
and need improvements to meet future demands from customers around
the world. The main issues are that the machine does not have the capacity
to detect missing plants from trays, the planting speed needs to be higher
and the row distance more flexible. The main assignment of the master
thesis is to generate two different suggestions for the module on the
transplanting machine. The module is loaded with trays and the main task
for the module is to handle the seedlings from tray to the lower module
that basically is a plow. The module should also be able to detect missing
or damaged plant and replace them in the process so that the planting
accuracy is high.
Purpose: The purpose is to develop a module that has a high planting speed and the
ability to detect and select plants.
Methodology: The thesis can be divided into six main parts:
• Introduction and research
• Identify customer needs
• Benchmarking and establish target specifications
• Concept generation and concept selection
• Final design
• Testing
During the first phase research have been made on BCC:s existing
machine where advantage and disadvantage was observed. In the second
phase the customer needs were identified and benchmarking was made. In
the same phase important specifications were established that formed a
base to develop the machine. A lot of time was spent on concept
generation to get as many suggestions as possible. The suggestions were
evaluated and only one final concept was developed at the end of the project due to the lack of time. A lot of different tests were made during
the entire project, but a final test for a fully designed prototype have not
been done because BCC:s budget and the little time that was remaining at
the end of the project.
Conclusions: A new transplanting machine with high planting speed and a capability to
select plants needs to be developed to meet future demands from
customers. Other important aspects are that the machine should have an
economic price, flexible row distance and few working on the machine
while it is running. To manage the high planting speed and to be able to
select, the machine needs to handle many plants at the same time and also
store plants in the module. Pneumatic is more suitable than hydraulic
because the motions have to be fast but not strong. However, the
hydraulic can be used when the motion needs a high torque and high
speed, for example the compressor. The new developed module fulfills all
the target specifications that were established in the beginning of the
thesis. The module can plant 180 plants per minute per row and still be
able to replace three defect plants after one other; thereby fewer personnel
are needed on the machine. The flexibility is also large regarding the
possibility to adjust the row distance. A rough estimation indicates that a
six row transplanting machine with six modules will cost BCC 820 000
SEK to produce. The conclusion of this is that BCC can take out a profit
but still have a lower selling price than the competitors that supply
comparable machines. (Less)
