Fasteners for Phone Housings in Metal Sheet

- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis was to examine how fasteners for mobile phone housing in
metal sheet could be designed. The assignment was defined by Sony Ericsson Mobile

Sony Ericsson has had metal in their covers before but only as a cosmetic layer, the
bearing parts have been made in moulded plastic. The reason to make a cover where
even the bearing parts are metal was to be able to increase the stiffness of it and be
able to make thinner phones that still have enough rigidity. A problem when making
the cover in metal is how to integrate fasteners in it, metal sheet does not have the
same design freedom as moulded plastic.
The work was concentrated to the front of the telephone and as base was a prototype
of a telephone that not has been released yet used. A market survey and a
brainstorming was done and resulted in a number of possible solutions. Then a
subcontractor, AQ Holmbergs in Anderstorp, was contacted to discuss those solutions
and see if they had other solutions.
The result after the evaluation of the solutions was a solution that used two layers of
metal sheet where one just fulfilled the cosmetic requirement and the other contained
all bearing elements. Insert moulding was to be used to attach plastic to the bearing
layer and fill out the space the deformations of it created between the two layers. The
fasteners, screw joints and some guiding pins, were mainly created in the plastic layer,
the bearing layer was just deformed to create space for them.
The calculations of the new front’s stiffness showed that it was an improvement
compared to the original front of the telephone. The new front was 170 percent stiffer
than the original and on the whole telephone the result was an increase of 14 percent. (Less)
