The purpose of this degree project was to map all the company’s sealings, their properties
and functions, to investigate any problems and find possible improvements of the
sealings that is used to day and can be used in the future. Then proposals of new
solutions should be drawn up, which will solve the problems that have been located and
describe how sealings can be improved. Before the project finish, there should also be
proposals of which specifications that are relevant to specify on the drawings of the
detailed components of the sealing.
The method behind this product development project is developed by Ulrich and
Eppinger. The product development method contains several steps, which step by step
investigate suggestions and eliminate less suitable ones. When the process is finished,
there will be one or a few suitable solutions, to solve the problem that was given from the
beginning. The final solution is later reviewed on detail level and designed to make it
possible to make a prototype. The prototype is tested to see if the earlier demands are
fulfilled. Next step is to summarize conclusions about the properties and suitability of the
prototype, to build a ground for the future of the project.
The process resulted in a prototype, with a new solution that increases the fixation of the
radial sealing, with nearly 30%. The solution can shortly be described like; a little track
in the contact surface on the component that is fixating the seal. The track is increasing
the friction, because the sealing swell into the track and therefore a bigger force is needed
to get the sealing out of position. Also the track will increase the sealing property,
because of the swelling there will be less leakage.
There will be some more studying, testing and developing of prototype, to optimize the
dimensions. There is also a new structure of the radial sealing, that can be used to
increase the fixation and without doing any changes in the component that is holding the
sealing in position.
Another part of the project was to increase the capacity of the sealing in new future
environments. This was solved by finding alternative sealing material, which had bigger
temperature range and better chemical resistance. Unfortunate there was no possibility to
do any prototype tests on the materials. This will need more study and new tests of the
materials to investigate their exact functionality. (Less)
