Abstract
Discussion The trend on the mobile phone market indicates that
mobiles with advanced texture will be in demand. Sony
Ericsson Mobile Communications AB would like to
examine what possibilities there are in the field for
texturing. In 2006 they introduced the mobile phone
W850i with advanced texture on the market and now
they want to know more about different techniques for
texturing in the future.
Research Questions Which problems are there putting a texture on a mobile
phone cover? What kind of methods are there to scan a
texture? How is it possible to texture the surface of a 3D
model? Which method is the best to use when making
the texture in the moulding tool?
Purpose The purpose of this Master Thesis is to examine what

model? Which method is the best to use when making
the texture in the moulding tool?
Purpose The purpose of this Master Thesis is to examine what
possibilities there are in the field for texturing in mobile
phone covers. Different scanning methods will be
evaluated, a way to project the texture to the 3D model in
CAD will be found and different methods for transferring
the texture into the moulding tool will be evaluated.
Conclusions This Master Thesis has resulted in a method for scanning
a texture, projecting it on a mobile phone cover and
transferring the texture into the moulding tool. There are
two ways to scan a texture; 3D scanning with an Atos
scanner in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB or
using the greyscale method on a 2D picture. When the
texture is in digital form the next step is to project the
texture on the mobile phone cover. The only program
found that can project both 3D scanned textures, a 2D photo transformed with the greyscale method and a
pattern drawn in a program like Adobe Illustrator are a
combination of ArtCAM and PowerSHAPE. There are
automatic functions for adding draft angles, removing
undercuts and fade the texture. From the programs it is
possible to get a stl file to send to the tool maker and
then he can use his own CAM program that he controls
best. The method to transfer the texture in to the
moulding tool is strongly dependent on what kind of
texture it is. Evaluation of etching, EDM, milling and
laser texturing has been done. Laser texturing seems to
be very interesting for the future and in time with tool
makers learning more it will probably be used more
frequently. Laser is exact, relatively cheap and a very
good method to use for many types of textures. (Less)
