Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to develop and design a new machine for fatigue
testing of bicycles. It was carried out for and in close cooperation with Svensk
Maskinprovning AB, The Swedish Machinery Testing Institute.
The machine was to test certain bicycle components according to a new standard of
certification, valid in the entire EU. The goal was to attack the problem as openmindedly
as possible. Therefore, I was not allowed to see their existing machines
until I had decided what main principles to use. To come up with a suitable solution
the method of dividing the problem into parts and then seeking many possible
alternatives was used. All alternatives were then further investigated and evaluated

until I had decided what main principles to use. To come up with a suitable solution
the method of dividing the problem into parts and then seeking many possible
alternatives was used. All alternatives were then further investigated and evaluated
until the best combination was found.
The result was a machine incorporating a linear unit with a ball screw driven by a
servo motor. Rotating the ball screw forces the carriage of the linear unit to translate.
An actuating rod is then connected from the carriage to the test object, thus
transmitting force onto it. The force applied to the test object is measured by a load
cell for control and verification purposes.
The time dedicated to finish the machine showed to be too short. All work on the
control of the unit was therefore left untouched, hopefully there will be another
master thesis to finish the project. Tests on the machine's mechanical and dynamic
performance show great potential and the chances of one day having a complete
working machine are looking good. (Less)
