Abstract
There is a need to make the front and specially the window on the phone more resistant to scratches and marks. The main reason for this is that scratched windows will spoil the appearance of the complete phone and customer will perceive variations on visual aspect that could make them change the brand. The improved scratch resistance for the front will also improve the yield during the production and make the phone appearance less vulnerable to abusive handling.
The project will look into the possibilities to make the window and the front more resistant to scratches and marks from handling during both production and usage. A central part of the project is to find a test method that makes it possible to evaluate scratch resistance for... (More)

The project will look into the possibilities to make the window and the front more resistant to scratches and marks from handling during both production and usage. A central part of the project is to find a test method that makes it possible to evaluate scratch resistance for different materials and coatings. The final goal is to give a new set of tests to improve the quality standards inside the company.
An evaluation of equipment and tests inside the Sony Ericsson is part of the initial phase. Further study includes certain modifications on equipment and procedures. New methods available are searched through the Internet. Interview as well as brainstorming sessions were conducted. Project focus in two main directions: how to do the scratches and how to evaluate them. Several samples were tested. Opportunities to expand the project in different directions are suggested inside this report.
Results provide new and better ways to evaluate coatings and windows resistance. Procedures are improved and tests, even when sometimes expensive, are included inside recommendations. Much information collected can be used to find alternatives for other uses inside the company. (Less)
