Abstract
The project task is to install an industrial robot and to construct peripheral parts to an automation cell for a masspectrometer (MS) on Protein Technology. The MS is used to determine the concentration of different masses in a sample. The mass spectrum can be used for disease detection by determine which proteins that healthy people got and compare it to diseased people.
The finished MS cell consists of five different devices or device groups; the robot system, The MS system, the re-grip station, the bar code reader and the plate rack(s). The MS system contains of three devices; the MS, an embedded computer that controls the MS and a host that communicates with the embedded pc and displays and processes the data for the user. The MS system contains of three devices; the MS, an embedded computer that controls the MS and a host that communicates with the embedded pc and displays and processes the data for the user. The host contains the software that communicates with the robot system.
To identify the plates there is a barcode reader, which is connected with the MS host. The bar code is compared with data in a database in the MS-host current projekt directory. If the bar code sent is equivalent with one in the database the sample could be run, otherwise the host sends a signal to switch plate without any data acquiring.
The robot system consists of the robot a catalyst 5 robot from CRS robotics, the robot controller and a PC that is used for programming the robot. The PC has a Visual Basic program to steer the robot using the robot controller, who interpret the Visual basic program commands to the robot. The PC gets signals from the host computer of the MS via the RS232 port to do a certain task. The Visual Basic program interprets the signal and sends back a response to the host by either a fault message, finished message or a start/continue process signal, this start/continue signal gives a signal to the robot to perform a task e.g. load the Maldi Micro MS.
