Abstract
A supply chain is often complex in nature. Goods, information, and money shall flow in and between companies in a simple and cost effective manner. There are a number of tools that companies can use to control and manage the supply chain in an efficient manner. In this work, two types of IT-based tools are compared i.e integrated and best-of-breed solutions. The questions this work will try to answer are how the companies select their IT-based tools and why they select that IT-based tool. The aim of the project is to explore what factors govern the selection of IT-based tools to enable effective management of material flow between the actors in the supply chain. It can provide a better understanding of how the choice of IT-based tools to... (More)

The aim of the project is to explore what factors govern the selection of IT-based tools to enable effective management of material flow between the actors in the supply chain. It can provide a better understanding of how the choice of IT-based tools to manage the supply chain is made. How tools are selected, the factor behind this is crucial in the election. The work is based on six case studies where companies have selected IT-based tools for managing its supply chain. Persons in position to decide which IT-based tools for supply chain company to choose responded to an interview the decision-making. It has also been taken into account firm-specific characteristics of the companies in which the case studies were compiled into a performance. Companies that have integrated IT-based tools before the decision-making process, select the integrated IT-based tool for supply chain. Companies who will have large installations of the IT-based tool have a tendency to select an integrated tool, while companies with smaller setups, select a best-of-breed tool. Why they choose the tool, where it is crucial that companies already have a relationship that becomes the supplier. (Less)
