Abstract
In this essay three factors, with importance for how proportionally centre and periphery in Swedish municipalities are represented in the local government, are studied. The factors are constituencies in the elections to the local government, the geographical extent of the municipalities and the relative importance of the main town or city in the municipality.

In this essay three factors, with importance for how proportionally centre and periphery in Swedish municipalities are represented in the local government, are studied. The factors are constituencies in the elections to the local government, the geographical extent of the municipalities and the relative importance of the main town or city in the municipality.
By comparing how proportionally centre and periphery are represented in the local government in municipalities with constituencies and municipalities without constituencies, in municipalities of varying geographical extent and in municipalities which vary in how important the main town or city is, the effect of the above mentioned factors on representativity in local government is shown.
The main results of the study are that the presence of constituencies will not increase the proportionality of the local government, that the larger the municipality is the more proportionally are centre and periphery represented, and that the higher relative importance of the municipality’s main town or city is the more proportionally are centre and periphery represented.
