Abstract
In contemporary research on foster care there is little research on what impact fostering has on relationships between the members of the carer’s biological family, and how family as a whole becomes affected. The questions we intended to look at were the following: (1) How do family members experience changes in the life of their family when they started to foster? (2) What strategies have been used to handle these difficulties? (3) How does the social services experience the effects that fostering has on the family system?

The questions we intended to look at were the following: (1) How do family members experience changes in the life of their family when they started to foster? In our research we used interviews with ten members of the foster care homes and two social workers to find answers to our questions. The theoretical ground for the analysis was derived from the system theory as we looked at the family as a whole striving to understand how different roles, rules, communication mechanisms and social networks transform in the process of adaptation to the needs of the foster child. The results showed that fostering always has an effect on the family, in different ways. The family system changes and the family finds different ways to handle this depending on initial conditions and family relations. The social workers are aware of the fact that the family system changes when a family start to foster, and they work to prevent the negative effects of this change. (Less)
