The aim of our essay was to study how attendants in forensic psychiatry experience their work situation, how they see forensic psychiatry as an institution and survey how they experience the relationship between themselves as professionals and their patients.

To interpret and compare the material we’ve gathered to previous research in this scientific area we’ve used theories about interactionism and power. We used a qualitative based method to conduct semi-structured interviews with nine attendants.
We found that the attendants we interviewed were aware of the difficulties with their profession and that they believe the keywords in their daily relationship with their patients is respect and empathy. The results also show us that the attendants often reflect on their relationship between themselves and their patients and that a good relationship is important for positive progress within forensic psychiatry.
