Abstract
Due to the fast pace of the developments within the media world reflection on its impact on young people and children is a hot topic. To have a successful impact in protecting them from media influence that can be harmful there has to be a cohesive understanding of the need for protection. On the 9th of June a commission submitted a report suggesting that the film – censorship for adults according to the current legislation should be abolished; but that the existing protection of children and young people should be increased by implementing a new public authority. On the 9th of June a commission submitted a report suggesting that the film – censorship for adults according to the current legislation should be abolished; but that the existing protection of children and young people should be increased by implementing a new public authority. I investigated whether the grounds for the decisions in the report on increasing the protection for children and young people corresponded with current research. I conducted this search by comparing the report with five different studies, focusing on the definition of negative media influence and the need to protect against these. Cohesiveness between the grounds for the report and the studies were found. The knowledge and understanding of the problem in the report had a direct link with some of the studies used in my search. I see this fact as an invitation for further research. Also that there exists a rift between generations and that there is a request for adult presence in and around childrens use of media. The world of media appears to be a socially constructed phenomenon as well as the definition of media influence. The world of media is a place that young people are not afraid to be a part of. It appears more naturally to those who themselve have developed alongside the development of media. (Less)
