- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine whether the cutdowns and the savings can have an effect on the health and the wellbeing of the personnel on the basis of their own stories as well as the meaning of the different leading styles that are used on the daily basis and how that can matter on the creation of a more healthy workplace.
The starting point of this study is the experiences of the personnel and the unit chiefs and not on the perspective of the organizations and the politicians. My questions at issue are: How do cutdowns and savings affect the health of the personnel? Can the leadership make a difference on creating a healthier workplace?

The starting point of this study is the experiences of the personnel and the unit chiefs and not on the perspective of the organizations and the politicians. My questions at issue are: How do cutdowns and savings affect the health of the personnel? Can the leadership make a difference on creating a healthier workplace?
The method I have chosen for this study is a qualitative method. I have interviewed a total number of six persons: two unit chiefs, one former unit chief and three staff members who work within three different houses for geriatric care.
The building stones of this paper rest on the answers of the respondents, earlier research, theoretical notions and two articles. Organizational theory, situation suited leadership and the HR – perspective is some of the bricks I chose in order to gain an increased theoretical understanding for the care of the elderly as an organization and how it works. I have mostly used the book from Ingela Thylefors “Ledarskap i human service organisationer” because I consider this book as a source of knowledge when it comes to leadership and leading within the care of the elderly.
The results and the conclusions are that cutdowns and savings affect the health and the wellbeing of the personnel, and the chiefs within the care of elderly have a finite action space to influence the situation. On the basis of the responses from the personnel, the result shows us that leader attributes and personal characteristics are of decisive importance when it comes to the wellbeing and the health of the personnel, while on the basis of the responds within leaders and chiefs, is that the organization is ruled by law and it has a hierarchic structure which means that all directives come from above and that their possibilities to help the employees are limited.
