Abstract
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the underlying factors of a youth’s attraction to criminal youth gangs. We have chosen a qualitative approach. The primary sources for our study were interviews with seven people. These interviews were semi structured in their approach. We have used the labeling theory in order to describe and analyze the phenomenon. The result further showed that criminal gangs usually arise in segregated residential areas, were many are troubled with tough socioeconomic circumstances. The study further found that the allure of making easy money can be a contributing factor of why youths join criminal youth gangs. It might also be a consequence of low self-esteem, which creates a desire of finding ones identity in a group. We further found that the media has an impact on the youths of today. The study also touched on solutions to the problem, which all point to activities where one works from an individual-based perspective in social work with youth.
