Abstract (Swedish)
The purpose of this study was to examine how the social secretary considers the notion of power in their meeting with the client on the occasion of both voluntariness and custodial care. Power is a crucial factor in all human relations. In the relation between the social secretary and the client it is obvious that the supplicant is the one who is in an inferior position. The study was based on a qualitative method consisting seven semi structured interviews with social secretaries. The analysis was based on Michel Foucault and Greta Marie Skaus theory of power which illuminates the meaning and importance of power from different perspectives.
As a conclusion the need of a good relation increased when the case went from voluntariness... (More)

The study was based on a qualitative method consisting seven semi structured interviews with social secretaries. The analysis was based on Michel Foucault and Greta Marie Skaus theory of power which illuminates the meaning and importance of power from different perspectives.
As a conclusion the need of a good relation increased when the case went from voluntariness to custodial care in the way that social secretaries had to be clearer and more distinct in communication. Social secretaries perceived themselves to have more power than clients. They believed that they could use this power as a tool in their work in order to influence clients to achieve a positive change. Social secretaries believed that clients improved their control of power using different strategies. Examples of such strategies could be to behave menacingly, late arrivals or default. The framing of environment was also of importance to enhance or undermine power in meetings with clients. (Less)
